Our Values and Non-Values

Establishing team values is critical. We believe it’s equally essential to identify team non-values. We’re stronger in driving our mission home with both values and non-values taken into account. Note: Our goal in sharing these up front and transparently is to be as straightforward with people as possible. Our goal is not to be combative in our language; it’s to be straightforward.

Communicate with
candor

We are a global team working from multiple corners of the world. Our style is a hybrid of asynchronous and synchronous communication.

Guiding Principle: Things can get misinterpreted/lost in translation; communicate with candor about your intentions

Aim for your full
potential

We are here to disrupt a stagnant industry and change the lives of millions of entrepreneurs. No one has built a Business-in-a-Box™ (until doola).

Guiding Principle: Continuously looking to grow is uncomfortable for some, but a growth mindset is vital; be extraordinary, not ordinary.

Taking initiative with a full-stack mentality

We aren’t a team that accomplishes goals through micro-managing. We’re a team of self-starters who can take unclear initiatives and run with them.

Guiding Principle: There is no “it wasn’t on the job description” at doola; if needed, we attack and complete any task end-to-end.

Be trustworthy and always ready to help

We hold dear our mission of turning entrepreneurs’ dreams into reality. Achieving our mission means doing so compliantly and with high accuracy.

Guiding Principle: Trust is a critical component of who we are and what we do – with each other internally and with our customers.

Urgency and focus to execute

As a fast-paced, early-stage startup with a massive opportunity for the taking, urgency and hustle are critical to get the ball moving.

Guiding Principle: Rome wasn’t built in a day, but they were laying bricks every hour; with our global team, so are we.

Strong opinions, loosely held

At doola, no questions or thoughts are considered off-limits—everything we do centers on delivering value to our customers.

Guiding Principle: We own up to our mistakes and, through candor, strive to share positive and constructive feedback.

Misalignment with the doola mission

As a small team with ambitious innovation goals, we need impactful, dedicated members who also believe in driving the mission forward. We strive to grow our team with people who see beyond the idea of “work” and who instead invest in being part of something greater than themselves. The goal is “work-life harmony” vs “work-life balance.”

Sanity Check: Ask yourself, “Is there something else out there I should be working on or towards right now?”

You prefer slow-paced, highly structured work

doola is a startup, not a 9 to 5 job, and we work like entrepreneurs, meaning you should expect to work more than the standard 40-hour workweek. We don’t evaluate performance based on “hours in the office.” We focus on impact: we care that customer problems are solved and work gets done well. A startup’s most significant advantage is speed, starting with you as an individual.

Sanity Check: Ask yourself, “Would I be irritated if I got a Slack message from someone on a Saturday or Sunday evening?”

We are a team, not a family

At doola, we consider ourselves a pro sports team, not a rec league team. We have stars in every position. Being a team does not mean we don’t have or share values that families have (trust, communication), but it does mean we are insistent on high performance. Why? Because the average startup, unfortunately, dies. Therefore, the only way to win is with an extraordinary team.

Sanity Check: The goal isn’t B-level results with A-effort; A-level results are rewarded with more responsibility and pay.

You identify problems, but don’t solve them

If we see problems, we take action as soon as possible and don’t ask for permission to have an impact. Rather than just being a backseat driver, you’re willing to hop in the driver’s seat, and when you see problems, drive towards a solution and get things done. At doola, we look for drivers vs passengers and barrels vs ammunition. This behavior is contagious and levels everyone up.

Sanity Check: Ask yourself, “Do I prefer for a manager to tell me what to work on and how to do it?”

You have a “my way” or the “highway” mentality

At doola, we like ego but do not stand for egotism. There’s nothing wrong with having a big ego. Ego means self-confidence and believing in yourself. But we don’t stand for egotism. Egotism means narcissism, selfishness, and arrogance. We are confident in our ability to deliver value. However, we treat each other with respect. And if we disagree? We “disagree and commit.”

Sanity Check: When you read, “We are all different, we recognize that and we win,” does that resonate?

You put your interests, before the company’s

At doola, your growth happens when the company grows, not “despite” or “regardless” of the company’s growth. Not only will every doolian grow, but we will be forced to grow. If you put your interests, goals, and personal motivations ahead of those of the company, there is no place for you at doola. We all trust that as the company grows, there will be growth for ourselves.

Sanity Check: We don’t tolerate ultimatums or anything that threatens or implies “me or the company.” The company always comes first.
